In 2007, Public Works (Solid Waste Information Management System), received a Best of California - Project Exellence Award from the Center for Digital Government for the best application serving organization business objectives and a Challenge Award from the California State Association of Counties.

In 2007, Public Works received four awards from the Los Angeles County 21st annual Productivity and Quality Awards Program. These include Million Dollar Club and Special Merit Plaque Awards (Franchise Trash Collection System), Certificate of Recognition (Garbage Disposal Districts), and Traditional Plaque Award (Solid Waste Information Management System). The PQA is a Countywide recognition program undertaken by the Quality and Productivity Commission, with the support of the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors and the Chief Executive Office.

In 2006, the Antelope Valley Environmental Collection Center (AVECC) was awarded a 2006 NACO Achievement Award by the National Association of Counties who recognize creative and effective programs. The Center provides a safe, efficient and convenient method for the residents of Los Angeles County to drop-off their Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronic Waste (E-waste) free of charge.

In September 2006, the Countywide Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Management Program received the 2006 Most Unique E-Waste Program Award by the California Integrated Waste Management Board. The Award recognized the County’s implementation of an E-Waste Recycling Radio Campaign with KFI AM 640. The campaign used a radio personality technology expert, Leo Laporte, to educate listeners that computers, televisions, and other electronics are "Too Toxic to Trash."

In 2005, the Countywide Smart Gardening Program was recognized as a Platinum Winner in the MarCom Creative Awards by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals for its excellent production of the Smart Gardening Video. The video was able to incorporate creative and motivational approaches to educating the public on the techniques of composting, worm composting, grass cycling, water-wise gardening, and fire-wise gardening.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) honored our Chinese Language Outreach Program and Plan-It Earth School Program with their 2004 Achievement Awards. NACo recognizes counties throughout the country for their hard work to promote responsible, responsive, and effective county government.

In December 2003, the Environmental Defenders Program received the Governor's Environmental & Economic Leadership Award for Children's Environmental Education. The award is given to exemplary educational programs or curricula to raise children's awareness of, and involvement in, environmental issues.

In 2003, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works received a Merit Award for its SmartGardening program from the
California State Association of Counties, which recognizes jurisdictions who use new and effective ways of providing programs and services to their citizens.

In November of 2002, the County of Los Angeles Household Hazardous Waste Public Education Program received the Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America. The HHW Public Education Program, which was recognized for its commitment to educate the public on the importance of proper household hazardous waste disposal, included collaborating with numerous radio/TV stations, home improvement stores, and home-related businesses to reach as many County residents as possible.

In October 2002 the Los Angeles County Environmental Resources website, 888CleanLA.com, received a plaque as part of the Productivity and Quality Awards program. The PQA is a County-wide recognition program undertaken by the Quality and Productivity Commission and the Productivity Managers Network, with the support of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Chief Administrative Office.

In June of 2002, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works received the EPA 2002 Environmental Award for its Integrated Waste Tire Recycling Program. The Awards are given to government agencies, environmental and community groups, professional organizations, businesses, media organizations, and individuals to honor a wide variety of successful programs and activities that improve the environment.

Also in June of 2002, a Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works by United States Senator Barbara Boxer in recognition of the Department's "outstanding accomplishments" in preserving the environment.

2002 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for the Earvin "Magic" Johnson Recreation Area Waste Tire Project.

The creative partnership between the County of Los Angeles and Heal the Bay was recognized with a Water Quality Award from the Regional Water Quality Control Board in April 2002 for its work in organizing Bay Days - an annual event fostering appreciation of the Pacific Ocean. This award is given to organizations that demonstrate their concern in the preservation and enhancement of water quality.

In 2001, the California Integrated Waste Management Board recognized several programs administered by the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works for their achievements in waste reduction. Our Integrated Waste Tire Recycling Program, Countywide Smart Gardening Program, SmartBusiness Recycling Program, and Battle of the Schools Waste Reduction Competition received Trash Cutters Awards for Innovation, Public Information, Urban Waste Reduction, and Schools, respectively.
In addition, our Environmental Defenders Program, Residential Recycling Public Education Program, and Environmental Resources Website (888CleanLA.com) received Honorable Recognition.

Generation Earth, the County's middle and high school environmental program, was awarded 2nd place in the 2001 Keep California Beautiful Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award category for its efforts in educating teens about protecting the environment. Keep California Beautiful recognizes outstanding efforts by communities, public and private organizations, community groups, schools, and individuals for their work to improve the State's environment.

EarthJam 2: Kids Conference on the Environment received the Distinguished Service Citation from the 2001 Keep America Beautiful Award Program. Earth Jam 2 is an all day event for Los Angeles County fourth-graders to participate in environmental learning by attending workshops about composting, water and energy efficiency, storm water pollution prevention and much more.
Keep America Beautiful is a nonprofit organization whose network of local, statewide and international affiliate programs educate individuals about litter prevention, and ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and properly manage waste materials.

Each year the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) recognizes outstanding waste reduction programs throughout the nation. In 2001, Los Angeles County was honored with awards for our Environmental Defenders, Generation Earth,
HHW Collection, and Used Oil Media Campaign Programs.

Los Angeles County received three
2001 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards which are awarded to recognize innovative county government programs that enable NACo to build a storehouse of county success stories that can be passed on to other counties. Our three programs winning awards relating primarily to waste reduction and pollution prevention: Local News Environmental Education Partnership with KTLA, the
County Procurement Programs and Cooperatives,
and the Waste Tire Recycling Program.

The Environmental Defenders assembly show video won national recognition as a finalist in the prestigious
2001 Telly Awards contest. The Telly Awards honor outstanding television, film, and video productions from all 50 states.

Environmental Programs Division created a booth for the L.A. County Fair, held in the Fall of each year. In 2001 the
LA County Fair Commission distinguished our booth as Best Exhibit Space.

For the year 2000, ten Los Angeles County programs were recognized by the California Integrated Waste Management Board
(CIWMB) for their achievements in waste reduction.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works' Residential Recycling Public Education Program,
County Departmental Recycling Program, and Los Angeles County Procurement Programs (recycled paper and re-refined oil) received Trash Cutters Awards for
Waste Prevention, Urban Waste Reduction, and Procurement, respectively. Also, Project Isaiah, a yearly gun collection and recycling
effort coordinated by the Los Angeles County Sheriffs' Department, received a Trash Cutters Award for Innovation.
In addition, we received Honorable Recognition in six of seven categories for our effective and sustainable waste reduction programs,
namely: the Waste Tire Recycling Program,
Countywide Yard Waste Management Program,
SmartBusiness Recycling Program,
Secondary School Environmental Education Program (Generation Earth),
our Environmental Resources Website (888CleanLA.com), and the Schools and HHW Partnerships we fostered.

The Los Angeles County Environmental Resources website (www.888CleanLA.com) was chosen by the International Association of Web Masters and Designers to receive their 2000-2001 Golden Web Award. In addition, the website was selected by Computer User Magazine (formerly known as Computer Currents) as one of their
Links of the Week for the week of May 8, 2000, for its originality, content and quality. The website is developed and maintained by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Environmental Programs Division.

The Environmental Defenders assembly show video received the 2000 Association of Visual Communicators Award of Distinction, a national award that recognizes excellence in visual communication.

Los Angeles County's EarthJam: Kids Conference on the Environment received the Best of the Best Award for Innovative IT Project at the 2000 Government, Business & Education Tech Expo. This Expo brings together representatives from the public and private sectors to share ideas about improving education.

Los Angeles County was the recipient of the California Integrated Waste Management Board's (CIWMB) 1999 Trash Cutters Award for Innovation for our Waste Tire Management Program. In addition, Los Angeles County received Honorable Mentions in four of the seven categories for our effective and sustainable waste reduction programs, which include our Countywide Departmental Recycling, Countywide Yard Waste Management, Business Recycling, Residential Recycling, Environmental Defenders, and Generation Earth Programs. This constituted the lion's share of honorable mentions given out for 1999.

The Generation Earth Program received the School Curricula Excellence Silver Award from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) for 1999 and 1998. SWANA recognizes outstanding educational programs throughout the Country.

Los Angeles County was also the recipient of the CIWMB's 1998 Trash Cutters Award for Outstanding Urban Waste Reduction Program. The award recognized the County's outstanding Rubberized Asphalt/Slurry Seal, Countywide Yard Waste Management, Business Recycling, Residential Recycling, annual Countywide Christmas Tree Recycling (seasonal), Environmental Defenders, and Generation Earth Programs.

The Environmental Defenders Program received the 1998 National Creativity in Public Relations Award (CIPRA) for the "Best National Program in the Environmental Issues Area." CIPRA is the largest and most prestigious awards program of its kind, and is presented by Inside PR, a leading public relations professional publication.

The Public Communicators of Los Angeles recognizes professionalism in public relations with the PRO Awards. The Environmental Defenders program was honored with first place in the 1998 Pro Awards for its printed materials.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors annually recognizes the top programs within the County for outstanding quality and creativity. EarthFest '98, an unprecedented Earth Day celebration created in conjunction with the Environmental Defenders program, CBS Television Channel 2, and Heal the Bay, was honored as one of the top programs for 1998.
