SOUTH WHITTIER'S "SUNSHINE SHUTTLE"
As residents of South Whittier board one of two new transit buses they may have to wear shades. The new 30-feet long buses feature a bold and distinctive new graphic style reflecting the line's new identity as the Sunshine Shuttle. The larger propane-powered buses are ADA-compliant, hold more riders, and are easy to identify as they roll through the community.
In addition to the upgraded buses, residents along the Sunshine Shuttle route, which serves more than 36 bus stops between Whittwood Town Center to the east and Sorensen Park to the west, will see new "sunshine" logo bus stop signs and street pennants installed.
Community input to rename the service and design its new look was led by an ad-hoc committee of 12 South Whittier community members appointed by County of Los Angeles Supervisors Gloria Molina (1st District) and Don Knabe (4th District). A grant secured by U. S. Representative Linda T. Sanchez (D-39th) provided the necessary funding for the new buses. Selbert Perkins Design (SPD) began working with the committee earlier this year. The Playa del Rey-based environmental design firm is most noted for the colorful 100-feet tall cylinders that greet visitors at the entrance of LAX. Other high-profile SPD projects include the logos for Downtown Disney, Union Station and Los Angeles World Airports, and the design concepts for every Tournament of Roses Parade since 2001. "Collaboration is such a vital part of what we do," explained SPD Marketing Director Nancy Martinez. "We explore a community's history and try to find its true identity. That's what we attempt to showcase."
The two-way shuttle service(eastbound and westbound) connects to various transit lines operated by the following transit providers: Metro, the cities of Montebello, Norwalk, and Santa Fe Springs, and the County-operated Los Nietos Shuttle.
