This past winter was one of the wettest on record. As rainfall totals continued to increase, so did the threats to the local infrastructure. Record breaking rainfall caused the closure of over 130 country roads. County roads sustained significant damage, and the public was frantically seeking information about the road closures. In response to the need for access to this emergency information, several different divisions joined together in order to develop the Road Closure website.
The Road Closure website provides the public with information about road closures and estimated reopening dates for affected roads within unincorporated areas of the County. Later enhancements to the website included the addition of before and after photos of damaged roads.
Response was immediate and overwhelming. Just weeks after becoming available to the public, the Road Closures website comprised nearly 25% of all visits to the Public Works Internet site, and site traffic spiked with each new storm.
For its ability to provide the public with responsive access to emergency information, we are proud to present the Road Closures website with an E-Government Project of the Year award.
