Residents are encouraged to attend a free Smart Gardening workshop. No reservation needed.
Learn to reduce yard waste and improve your lawn and garden. Workshops are about 1.5 hours.
Get step by step instructions on how to compost, and learn the benefits and biology.
Workshops are held at our Learning Centers and at local events
such as Bay Days, Long Beach Home Show, and the County Fair. The Program also works
with cities to provide workshops at community centers, libraries, parks, or schools.
Beginning Workshops introduce you to smart gardening.
Advanced Workshops are for those that love to garden

Beginning workshops provide hands-on instruction on composting, worm composting,
grass cycling, water-wise gardening, and fire-wise gardening. Interested
residents can purchase composting bins and
worm composting bins at a discount.
Advanced workshops introduce landscape design,
landscaping with native friendly plants, installing a water-efficient irrigation system,
organic gardening, the art and science of good soil, integrated pest management
(environmental ways to control pests), conserving water around the garden,
and using drought-tolerant plants. Composting bins
will be sold at a discount.
