Workshops and Schedules Page About Workshops & Schedules

Since the inception of the Program in 1994, residents have been taught to effectively reduce yard waste and improve their lawn and gardens through our Smart Gardening Workshops. These workshops cover all of the Program components in a presentation of approximately two hours in length. Each component provides residents with tools and techniques necessary to reuse readily available resources. Residents not only receive step by step instructions on how to compost, but are also educated on the benefits and biology of compost.

WORKSHOPS: The workshops provide hands on teaching on composting, worm composting, grasscycling, water-wise gardening, and fire-wise gardening. Demonstrations of various composting techniques are done using compost bins available at these centers. No reservations are necessary for these workshops, unless otherwise stated. In its continued effort to increase composting participation, the County has worked with various composting bin vendors to provide bins at affordable prices to all Los Angeles County residents. Currently, at most of our workshops, interested residents can purchase a backyard composting bin and a worm composting bin at discounted prices.

REGIONAL EVENTS: In addition to workshops at the 11 Demonstration Centers, and advertising as part of the promotional effort, the Program participates in local and regional events. Events include Bay Days, the Long Beach Home Show, the Los Angeles County Fair and many others.

The Program also works closely with the 88 cities in Los Angeles County to provide services to residents who do not live near a center or in cities that do not have a similar program. Instructors provide services to residents by conducting workshops in facilities such as community centers, libraries, parks, schools or company buildings.

Please contact us if you would like more information about scheduling future workshops.
