Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Is there a timeframe for putting away trash cans? My neighbors have left trash/recycle bins, with trash in both, out for 2 weeks.

Answer:
The answer to your question depends on where you live.

If you are in an unincorporated area of the County (i.e., not within a city), then County Code 20.72.110 (Containers - Hours of Placement) would apply. This states that no person shall place any solid waste container out for collection before 5:00 p.m. of the day preceding the scheduled collection or leave the container out after 8:00 p.m. on the day of actual collection, or more than two hours after actual collection, whichever is later. If you are in a County unincorporated area and the above applies, please contact the waste hauler providing the service for instructions how to proceed, or contact our office at 1(888)CLEAN LA and provide information we will need to look into the matter.

If you are in the City of Los Angeles or another city, please contact the Recycling Coordinator of that city for advice, as each city is responsible for its own trash and recyclables collection services. The Recycling Coordinators link below will give you a list of Recycling Coordinator names and contact information for all 88 cities in the County.
