Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
I just installed a Burglar alarm and fire alarm monitoring system in my house. Are there any permits that I need to have?

Answer:
Typically, residential burglar/fire alarm systems do not require an electrical permit, provided it meets the following exemptions from Section 82-3 of the Los Angeles County Electrical Code: "(c) Electrical wiring, devices, appliances, apparatus or equipment operating at less than 25 volts and not capable of supplying more than 50 watts of energy. (d) Low-energy power, control, and signal circuits that are not an integral part of an appliance and in which the power is limited from a source having a rated output of not more than 30 volts and 1,000 volt-amperes. (i) Private telephone, intercom, sound and communication systems; provided, however, that the above system(s) do not exceed the value as indicated in (c) and (d) of this section. A permit shall be obtained for the power supplies required by the above systems."
Note: Permits may be required for work unrelated to the burglar/fire alarm system.
