Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Why has the San Gabriel River been flowing for a month at a time when it would normally be dry?

Answer:
The San Gabriel River from Whittier Narrows Dam to Firestone Blvd. is almost constantly being utilized to infiltrate surface water into the groundwater aquifer. Currently, both recycled water and water imported from northern California is being delivered to this stretch of the river to percolate into the ground. These groundwater recharge activities are critical, especially during periods of drought, since groundwater accounts for approximately 1/3 of the regions drinking water supply.
