Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
I have a fire hydrant located in front of my residence and motorists are not following the parking code of 15 feet on either side of the hydrant. Is it possible to have that section painted red to alert motorists?

Answer:
Parking near a fire hydrant is prohibited by the California Vehicle Code regardless of whether the curb is painted red or not. There are several thousand hydrants in County area and it is our longstanding practice to not paint the curb. To do so, would not provide any additional enforcement capability. If we did paint the curb, and that does require periodic repainting as the paint fades, it would significantly cost taxpayers indefinitely. We make every attempt to utilize scarce public funds in the most effective way possible. If you observe a parking violation concern, I advise you call your local Sheriff's station and they can provide added enforcement. Strong enforcement is a very effective tool to minimize the problem you are observing.
