Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Who is responsible for sewer repairs?

Answer:
If your property is located within the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County or a member of Consolidated Sewer Maintenance District (CSMD), the Department of Public Works is responsible for the public sewer main, which is located in the public street or easements. Each home or commercial building has a separate connection to the public sewer main called a sewer lateral. Under current Los Angeles County Code, Section 20.24.080, it is the property owners responsibility to maintain and repair their sewer lateral up to the point of connection with the public sewer main, including the portion of the sewer lateral beneath the sidewalk and street.
