Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Is it possible to have a drop-box on the street corner for people to drop off their household hazardous materials (HHW)?

Answer:
Thank you for using our website and we appreciate your initiative to properly dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste (E-waste) and your concern to protect public health and the environment.

The household hazardous waste contains corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients that require special handling and care when you dispose of them. Product labels need to be read carefully for disposal directions to reduce the risk of products exploding, igniting, leaking, mixing with other chemicals, or posing other hazards. Even empty containers of HHW can pose hazards because of the residual chemicals that might remain. Thus, it is not safe, nor recommended having a drop box on each street corner for HHW disposal.

The County of Los Angeles operates one of the nation's largest HHW/E-Waste Management Programs. The County conducts over 60 free collection events each year, with one or more taking place almost every weekend throughout the County. All the HHW brought in, is sorted and handled with care by certified individuals to avoid any hazard and danger to the people and the environment. In addition, through our partnership with the City of Los Angeles, all residents in the County of Los Angeles have free access to City of Los Angeles-sponsored collection events, as well as the City's six permanent Solvents/Automotive/Flammables/Electronics (S.A.F.E) centers, one being on the border of Los Angeles/Glendale. Additionally, certain cities also provide city-specific services for their residents. The City of Glendale has a center located at 780 Flower Street, Glendale, CA 91201. For more information, you may visit www.CleanLA.com or call 1 (888) CLEAN LA. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you, and we will continue to look for ways to enhance opportunities for residents to properly dispose of HHW and E-waste.
