Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
What is Values Management?

Answer:
In 2005, Public Works administered a comprehensive Cultural Assessment of its employees to ascertain their perceptions and concerns related to workplace climate and morale, diversity, equity and fairness, prospects for career advancement, equal employment opportunity, and ethnic and cultural issues.

This Cultural Assessment revealed several opportunities for the Department to better align its culture with employees¡¦ desires for a workplace that is safe, fair, and empowering, and which understands and values individuals and their diversity. To leverage these opportunities, the Public Works formed Values Management Councils consisting of employees throughout the organization to address specific issues. These councils are the Communication Council, Diversity Council, Equal Employment Council, Ethics Council, Field Council, and Women¡¦s Leadership Council. In parallel, as part of a new Strategic Plan, the Department adopted new core VALUES:

„«Safety
„«Professionalism
„«Integrity
„«Respect
„«Innovation
„«The Environment

These core VALUES, coupled with the Values Management Councils, form Public Works¡¦ Values Management Program, the goal of which is to infuse them into our department¡¦s culture and enhance the quality of the DPW workplace by:

„XEstablishing the core VALUES and the initiatives of the Values Management Councils as the guiding principles by which our employees carry out their jobs and behave toward the public and each other every day.
„XStriving to achieve alignment between existing and ideal organizational values.
„XIdentifying changes and establishing systems and practices which enhance a healthy, inclusive, rewarding, and productive workplace.
