Santa Anita Habitat Mitigation Project Update May 2015 |
Plants and Wildlife |
The first phase of planting (completed in early 2014) involved the installation of over 4,900 native container plants, including 358 oaks, and the application of over 135 pounds of native seed. The second phase of planting (completed in December 2014) involved the installation of over 1,900 additional container plants, and additional application of 25 pounds of seed. The site is now home to over 100 species of plants native to the area, including three species of oaks (coast live oak, Engelmann oak, and San Gabriel oak), cacti, ferns, shrubs, perennials/grasses, as well as beneficial fungi. The site is also host to over 80 species of wildlife (vertebrates), including bears, deer, squirrels, birds, lizards, and treefrogs, and many species of butterflies and other beneficial insects. As the native flora/fauna are making themselves at home, our restoration specialist is working tirelessly to maintain and protect the site. |
Maintenance |
Site maintenance includes weed eradication and pest control using eco-friendly methods. To further protect the site from exotic species, our restoration specialist removed invasive plants from nearby slopes in fall 2014. Irrigation on the site is currently limited to once every 4 to 6 weeks. Due to the current drought conditions, we have adjusted our irrigation events at the site to occur prior to 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to reduce evaporation and conserve water. The site's long term maintenance plan calls for tapering off irrigation as the native plants become established in a self-sustaining oak woodland and sage scrub habitat. |
Miscellaneous |
All deliveries to the site will continue to enter the Elkins Avenue gate and proceed south through the sediment placement sites (SPS) to the mitigation site (Lower SPS). We have instructed the restoration specialist not to operate trucks and equipment or transport them through the residential streets before 7:00 AM or after 5:00 PM Mondays through Fridays. No habitat maintenance work will be performed during the weekends. |
As a reminder, NO TRESPASSING is permitted within the fenced plateau and along the planted slopes below. Trespassing could disturb sensitive wildlife such as nesting birds, and result in the introduction of invasive plantsas seeds can be spread by individuals' shoes and/or attach to pets' fur. |

PROJECT SUMMARY |
The Los Angeles County Flood Control District's Santa Anita Habitat Mitigation Project (HMP) is a mitigation measure arising from the Santa Anita Dam Riser Modification and Sediment Removal Project that was completed by the District in 2012. The sediment removal project filled up the lower portion of the Santa Anita Sediment Placement Site (lower SPS), and as a result this portion of the site is retired and will not be subject to any further sediment placement. |
The goal of the Santa Anita HMP is to successfully create 8.0 acres of habitat on the newly filled and retired lower SPS (5.5 acres of oak woodland on the plateau and 2.5 acres of coastal sage scrub on the side slopes of the fill site). All planting and maintenance will be conducted by an experienced restoration specialist. Maintenance and monitoring of the site will be conducted for a minimum of seven years after planting or until the site has been evaluated as self-sustaining by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The District is coordinating closely with CDFW and is committed to the successful achievement of all restoration objectives. |
