Los Angeles County Waterworks District
Water Sources
The Los Angeles County Waterworks Districts provide customers with water from two main sources of supply, local groundwater and imported water.

In areas where local groundwater is available, the Districts own and operate groundwater production wells which are used to pump the water from the groundwater basin to the surface. The groundwater is then disinfected and pumped into the distribution system.

The imported water supplied by the Districts consists primarily of water obtained from the Sacramento River/San Joaquin Delta via the State Water Project (SWP). The Districts purchase imported water from local SWP Contractors or regional wholesale water agencies. The imported water is generally treated using conventional treatment methods including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
