| March 20, 2008 - Work has begun on IEN Version 2 |
Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has begun work on the next phase of their Countywide Information Exchange Network system.
The existing software was developed in 2001 under the San Gabriel Valley Pilot Project to support a limited number of agencies and devices. The new version
will increase the capacity of the system, make the distribution of data between agencies more efficient, and add several new features to improve inter-agency
signal coordination. These improvements include the following:
- Real-time time-space diagram: A new application will be added to provide time-space diagrams of traffic moving through the arterial street network.
- Automatic detection of coordination changes: A new feature will be added to record communication state, timing mode, timing plan, offset, and cycle length changes for selected controllers. The system will compare the current coordination data with the previous week’s data and alert users if this information differs.
- Cycle lengths on the map: A new status filter will be added to the map to allow users to compare the cycle lengths of intersections.
- Direction of the main street movement: The direction of main street green will be added to the intersection icons that are shown on the map.
- Increased capacity: The pilot project software will be expanded to support the total number of agencies and devices within the County.
- On-demand polling: The IEN will be modified so that second-by-second data would only be requested from traffic control systems when an application window is open that requires that data. This change will greatly reduce the burden on both traffic control systems and IEN network links.
- Automatic detection of inventory changes: A new feature will be added to automatically create new devices as Agencies report them through their traffic control system command/data interface programs. The system will also indicate which devices are no longer being reported so that administrative users can remove them.
- Data throttling: The IEN will be enhanced to allow administrators to control how much data is distributed to each member agency. This change will make the IEN more flexible and allow it to support network links of different bandwidths.
- Data filtering: Filtering features will be added to the IEN user interfaces so that users can better focus on the agencies and devices of interest to them.
- Tracking IEN component status: The IEN will monitor and report on the state of the various software components and network connections that make up the system. This will help administrators at the County better maintain the system at each of the remote sites.
- Enhanced command/data interface (CDI): An enhanced command/data interface will be developed to collect more data from traffic control systems in support of the changes listed above. The new IEN software will continue to support the pilot project version of the command/data interface as well.
IEN version 2 is scheduled to be released later this year.
